CHAPTER 17

Russell Palmer rested with his eyes closed as the ferry rolled across the rough stretch of sea. He mentally compared their findings at the museum’s library with the fuzzy recollections of his prior research. The uneven pitching motion distracted him to the point that he was on the verge of vomiting, making it difficult to concentrate.

“I need to talk to you privately. Now,” Brandon Sharpe whispered, interrupting Russell’s train of thought.

Russell slowly opened his eyes. Bright fluorescent lights along the ceiling hurt his eyes. The turquoise seats, packed with passengers, came into focus. The entire cabin rose and fell with the swells of the Caribbean Sea. His queasiness worsened. He wanted to close his eyes again, but Brandon wouldn’t let him.

“Let’s go to the back. By the snack bar,” he continued. “Without Carmen.”

Russell looked at Carmen, who sat on the other side of Brandon. She had sensed that something was amiss, and leaned over. “What’s up?” she asked Brandon.

“I need to talk to Russell about an idea that I have. I don’t want anyone to hear us,” he whispered to her.

“We could go to the back,” she suggested.

“You don’t understand. This is between Russ and me for now.”

“I think we’re all in this together,” Carmen asserted, still keeping her voice low.

Brandon paused, then said, “Just wait here. I’ll let Russ decide.”

Great, Russell thought. Something’s bothering Brandon, which is probably going to piss off Carmen, and I’m going to be the fall guy.

“Wait here,” Brandon said to Carmen as he stood. “We’ll only be a couple of minutes.” Russell followed Brandon as they squeezed past Carmen and the two ladies sitting next to her to reach the aisle. They walked to the rear of the cabin to an unmanned narrow display counter that served as the snack bar.

“So, what’s this idea that just can’t wait?” Russell began in a hushed tone.

“You remember the other night, when you first got here? We stopped at that restaurant in Playa del Carmen?”

“Yeah,” Russell replied. “What does that have to do with anything?”

“You remember that I talked with a blonde girl just before we left? Her name is Shari.”

“Sure.”

“I’m supposed to meet her by the pier in Playa del Carmen around six this evening. At one of the bars on the plaza.”

Russell checked his watch, finding it difficult to hold still as the ferry dropped into a trowel between the swells . “It’s five after six right now.”

“Right,” said Brandon, checking to see if Carmen was watching them. “So Shari’s going to be looking for me. I don’t want her to be disappointed.”

“What do you want me to do about it?”

“Funny you should ask. I’m thinking that you can take the truck and drive Carmen to her place in Puerto Morelos. Then drive back here to meet me.”

“And this is the brilliant idea that you were hiding from Carmen?”

“Well. Yeah,” Brandon blushed.

“What is Carmen supposed to think? Aren’t you going to tell her the truth?” Russell held onto the counter.

“I like Carmen, but I don’t think we’ll ever get serious.
